William Street

First published Aug 9, 2012

The stretch of William Street, connecting the city of Sydney with Kings Cross, used to be littered with hire car outposts and luxury car dealers.  However, city council is tidying up the area and is working on this section of William Street as being a destination for the arts.  This is evidenced by new cafes, coffee shops and stores replacing the empty shop fronts of said car dealers...

The bus stops here! What a perfect location for a chocolate shop! I had a tiny cup of hot chocolate here.... and it was just the right size for a taste without feeling like it was too much! The white tile interior is a simple backdrop to set off the gorgeous handmade chocolates.

Original location of Miss Chu on the corner of William and Bourke streets.  A must-stop for Asian finger foods.

Cloth Fabric has recently relocated from a quiet sleepy street to this main thoroughfare. My brother had spotted it from the bus and knew I would like it... cloth and fabric... a no-brainer he said.  What a gorgeous store it is... loaded with beautiful modern fabrics all designed in store with sustainability in mind.

If Cloth Fabric wasn't enough... just down the street is Goldstein - catering warehouse.  I am embarrassed to say, I walked around with my mouth agape.  Anything you need to start up a restaurant is here... from plates and glasses, to commercial mixers and fridges.  All the little details you see in cafes... table number holders, salt dishes, paper cups... all yours for the taking.  (Well, actually, you'd better pay for it as I don't think they look too lightly on shoplifting!)  It is open to the public and there are no minimum orders.  Except on the glassware, which is a minimum order of 12.  At these prices though, you could buy a couple of sets if you can't decide on a favorite shape.  I know where I will be when it comes time for me to set up my kitchen.  (Dreaming of that day!)  Or perhaps a coffee and cake shop!
