Someone needs to issue a memo to all tourists visiting Bondi... ok... maybe that someone should be me! Be sure to bring your bathing suit, a towel and enough time to enjoy yourself! I was smiling at some the other day. It was so cute... they had stripped off their shirts, and had rolled up their pants to walk in ankle deep into the surf. However, they were drenched from head to toe! You can’t go to Bondi and just dip your toe in the water! It is the only beach where I have seen people walk into the water fully dressed. The ocean is irresistable, so it’s best to come prepared!
The gorgeous Aquabumps gallery at 151 Curlewis St is a must-see for any visitor. The owner/photographer spends his days photographing Bondi and surrounds. He has seen Bondi and it’s best, and worst, and has accrued a stunning collection of images. One day, when I have my large, white apartment overlooking the ocean, I hope to install a large colorful photo of Bondi beach on one of the walls. For now, I am content to drool over the images in the gallery, or online... www.aquabumps.com. Sign up to have a daily dose of beach and surf delivered to your inbox.
The Shop and Wine Bar at 78 Curlewis St is a great stop for lunch. I know their menu has a tasty selection of salads and sandwiches... but I never get past the poached chicken with rocket and sweet chili sauce. Their coffees go down smooth as well.
La Macelleria... Italian butcher... one block up from the beach. The store is chock full of Italian goods... meat, pasta, sauces, salts. The best part is, they have take away sandwiches. A nice change from the typical fast food chains that line the strip. Grab a provolone, proscitto and tomato baguette and head to the beach to max out your time in the sun. Warning... the sandwiches are quite large, so you may not need to eat for the rest of the day!
Panama House at 251 Bondi Road, is owned by the same owners at Shop & Wine Bar... so you know the food is going to be tasty! As the name would suggest, they serve up Central American food such as tacos and po' boys with options of fish, prawn, oyster fillings. The food is fresh, and served up with jars of spicy condiments... my favorite by far being the spicy pineapple sauce.
Bondi is stunning, and has many layers. This post hardly justifies it, but they are some of my current favorite bits of Bondi. No doubt I will find more to write about soon!
